At the hotel or game lodge

It was with a heavy heart that we decided to pull the plug on PhilGuides Southern Africa, it was a passion project and circumstances beyond our control made it impossible to continue. We saved all the information and carried it here. Geraldine and Pascal will try to keep it up to date and add more information as time goes by, you may even find a tour or two in the future.

While travelling within South Africa, you might find the following tips very useful.

At the hotel or game lodge

Before getting dressed, check for little critters in your clothing by shaking them and shake them out of your shoes by turning them around. You would be amazed at crawls in at night, from spiders to scorpions will hide the strangest of places, this is frequent in game reserves.

Before going to bed, check your bedding for other critters. Fold the blankets all the way back. Sometimes creatures as innocuous as a lizard or as dangerous as a snake will look for refuge between the sheets. While this doesn’t happen frequently, it does happen.

Leave your air conditioning running, even on a low setting. Mosquitoes and other flying insects don’t like the aircon.  If you find the aircon has been turned off (as sometimes the staff are trained to do) switch your unit on as soon as you get in.

Keep electronic equipment such as laptops and tablets or other valuables in your hotel safe. If your hotel room does not have a safe, or if it is too small, the hotel reception usually has one.
