After my trip of 8 days in the Kruger National Park, I have to make a few observation about the park as it is today.

  1. The wild card is great!!!
  2. The food and service in the restaurants have improved.

I must be honest the early mornings got to me, we slept in late and left at about 7:30, this was to be a birding day. We saw the odd giraffe, a couple of various bucks and the obligatory elephants. We took some more sand roads along the Mozambican border towards Mopani and came back on the tarred road (S134,S50,H1-6). The highlight of the day was the endangered Ground Hornbills and African Green Pigeons, both are rather rare.

We left Bulule Rustic Camp early and were handsomely rewarded for it. Another skirmish, this time between a African Fish Eagle and a couple of Egyptian Geese, to my utter surprise the geese won. That’s also the day I discovered that I had forgotten to push my ISO settings to 400 for higher speeds in the park, I should know better. We then came across un unusual sight a bunch of vultures from different species eating away on the side of the road. We also saw a skittish hyena, more elephants and zebras. We took the long way to Shingwedzi via the sand roads again (S91, H1-5, H9, S131, S133, H14, H1-6, S142, H1-6), stopping at Mopani to have lunch on the deck. Unfortunately for us it rained for the better part of the day.

We stayed in the Oliphant / Letaba region as we were to go back to Balule Rustic Camp, it was another hot day in the bush paradise. We decided to go back to Letaba the “long way around” the trip took us on the sand roads between the 2 (S92, S93, S44, S46, S47, H9, H1-5, S91). It all began with the inevitable Liliacbreasted Roller and a Giraffe but the catch of the morning was a skirmish between a Crocodile and an Hippopotamus at the Olifants Lookout point on the S44. I was very surprised by the amount of Crocodiles, Hippopotamus, Vultures and Elephants in the park. The catch of the day must of been the most elusive predator of the park, the Leopard just before 16:00 on the S47.
