Photography Show

Photo and Film Expo is the 2nd Expo in 3 weeks at the Coca-Cola Dome north of Johannesburg which I went to, the previous one was the The Women’s Show which included a whole going green show, but more about that in another blog.

Let me first say that it was not worth the R80 per person in my opinion, if it was not for the dedicated friendly staff of OutdoorPhoto and my friends at Universal Image it would of really been boring, yes that includes the talks and demos. One more for the books, the security staff should all get fired, they are so rude. Worst I will be back a the Coca-Cola Dome next weekend for the World of Dogs, Cats & Pets Expo I hope it will be a better one.

I found something very strange at the show, Nikon was there with a presence, SONY too but Canon was missing, I wander why?

OK, on happier notes thanks to the staff and initiatives of OutdoorPhoto I was able to try a lens and a few Canon’s EOS 1D’s with some heavyweights.

First up is my Canon EOS 400D paired with a Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM a lens I will be talking about soon as I am looking to buy one in this range. First thing I noticed was it’s weight or rather lack of it, it feel more like a toy then a lens. I took a couple of indoor photos and had to manipulate them quiet a bit to get this.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM at 10mm f4.0 1/40 ISO800
10mm f4.0 1/40 ISO800

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM at 17mm f4.5 1/30 ISO800
17mm f4.5 1/30 ISO800

First thing that freaked me was at 10mm, an effective 16mm on an AP-C camera, was that everyone looked fat, that is heavy distortion if you ask me, at 16mm things get better. In brief, the Sigma AF 10-20mm f/4-5.6 HSM EX DC which I tested a couple of months back look like a better option in my opinion.
I then proceeded to try a Canon EF400mm f/2.8L IS USM mated yo a Canon EOS-1D Mark III, wow… This image was taken indoors and has not been modified in any ways except a resize.
The perfect Paparazzi lens if you ask me, unfortunately at tad outside my price range at a cool R100,770.00 I could by a bran new car for that. But still, magnificent results.

I then moved on to a Canon EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM mated with a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III and again it did not disappoint and again this is only resized, you may notice a bit of grain this photo was taken at a cool ISO3200.

I move onto a Canon EF500mm f/4L IS USM mated with a Canon EOS 50D, you will notice the grain even after I worked on the photo to smooth it the ISO was set to a mind boggling 12800, still I am surprised at the result.

When I go to shows like these I pair my Canon EOS 400D with my Canon EF24-70 f/2.8L USM, I carry no flash with me I have not found the need to. That is how versatile and low light tolerant this lens is. I said that it would prove itself in the field and it has not let me down yet. Here are a few photos I took at the show of things I did not expect to see there…

Cheetah at the Epson stand (f/3.2 1/40 ISO800)

Lamborgini (f/2.8 1/30 ISO800)

Car (f/2.8 1/125 ISO800)
